Congratulations to our CFM February Member of the Month Sheila Kuchibhatla!

We sat down with Sheila and asked her why she loves CrossFit so much and how she got into the sport!

Member of the Month Spotlight

Name : Sheila Kuchibhatla

Occupation: I’ve earned the name Chief ProvacatueHR because I challenge HR teams in Fortune 500 companies to think in bold new ways about to deliver better people experiences to their employees.

How were you introduced to Cross Fit & How long have you been doing CrossFit?:

One of my fittest and happiest girlfriends told me about a burpee and box jump workout she did at her Tampa CF box; she told me I’d like it. I listen to pretty much everything she says.

What made you decide to join CFM:

Two words – Steve Cristini. I know that sounds weird, sorry. It was January 2016– I dropped my daughters at their math class and decided to check out CFM. The 11 am Lite class was going on. Steve was at the desk. I remember saying “Hi, not sure if this is for me or if I belong here, but do you have a brochure I could take home?” No brochure. And no judgment, either. Only Steve’s clear and simple explanation about how CFM works and his genuine disposition that suggested CF is for anyone. He invited me to watch the 11 am and come for a trial class. I liked seeing that there were members of all fitness levels working hard.

At the trial class I met Ben and Jordana, whose coaching was unlike anything I had received. All the movements were new to me and they patiently demonstrated so I could focus on my form. It was apparent on the first day that CFM was a respectful and results-oriented community.

So Steve’s initial welcome was the reason I tried CFM, the coaching and community is why I keep coming back.

Favourite Lifts/ Wods?

I do the Lite classes exclusively. Is it crazy that I like the Filthy 50? I also love Anna’s warm ups – there’s always an element of fun (love the musical chairs with the wall balls, love when she plays Roxanne or that ‘up and down’ song where we have to squat every time!)

3 Things you would definitely find in my fridge…

  1. Greek yogurt
  2. Almond butter and Ezekiel bread (Jordana introduced that to me)
  3. Jalapeno peppers

Favourite place to eat

I just tried Planta (1221 Bay St)… it’s a vegan/vegetarian place. OMG the coconut ceviche is so good.

Markham Sushi, Ambiyan; We have two kids, so we go where they enjoy meals…usually that’s Jack Astor’s.

Proudest Accomplishments:

I completed my first Spartan Spring in July 2016—thanks to CFM. I ran it alone and completed all of the obstacles in 3 hours. And I finished strong, with high energy and huge arms! I was so incredibly proud of myself. And my kids this the Spartan Jr race that day, too. I am thinking of doing it again this year—trying to encourage a few friends to join me.

Something people wouldn’t know about me:

In 2008, I had emergency spinal surgery and doctors thought I would lose my left arm. All I lost in the surgery was one vocal cord, which makes my voice a bit pitchy. But I can be a wife, mom and I can do CF, so I am happy.

Biggest struggle in life?

That is a huge question. In terms of health, it has to be healthy snacking. I work from home a lot and my kid-friendly pantry makes it irresistible to reach for a cookie or a scoop of Nutella (especially during a stressful day). When I am not at my home office, I am on a plane to client offices. Eating well during business travel is always hard for me.

Who inspires you?

I love, love, love reading before and after stories about people who put the work in and have benefited from CF. My physical results haven’t been as noticeable, but I am definitely a happier person because of CF.

My husband takes care of his health, too. We feed off of each other in a friendly competition sort of way. He flexes his muscles, er, I mean, schedule, so I can get to the gym.

What music I like listening to while working out:

90s hip hop – Anna plays it sometimes on Saturdays – I love mouthing the words and dancing a bit during my work outs. She plays Kriss Kross’ “Jump” when we were doing jumping pull ups and that song totally saved me.
